Back-to-school shopping checklist

Lunch box and school supplies were the two highest relative-interest terms in our past-30-day Canadian search-interest watch, observed 2026-08-14, ahead of wireless mouse, laptop backpack and desk lamp within that set. Relative interest is a normalized comparison, not search volume. Treat it as a hint about timing, not as a shopping instruction.

Shop the list you already have first

Most schools publish a supply list. Buy against that list before buying against a sale. The cheapest item in a back-to-school haul is the one you did not need.

1. Check what survived last year: bags, containers, cables and chargers often have another year in them.
2. Match the school list item by item, including quantities.
3. Only then look at upgrades or replacements.

Lunch boxes and containers

• Check the stated external dimensions against the bag it must fit inside.
• Check the number and size of compartments, and whether the listing states they are leak resistant.
• Look for an explicit dishwasher-safe statement, and whether the lid is dishwasher safe too.
• Check whether the listing states it is free of BPA, and whether replacement lids or seals are available.

Backpacks

• Confirm the stated capacity in litres and the stated laptop-sleeve size in inches.
• Match the sleeve size to the actual device, measured diagonally, not to a brand name.
• Check the stated material and whether water resistance is claimed by the listing rather than implied by a photo.
• Check the stated weight when empty, and whether the listing mentions a padded back panel or chest strap.

Power, batteries and charging

• Count the devices that need charging and the outlets available at the desk before choosing a power bar.
• For power bars, check the stated cord length, number of outlets, and whether surge protection is claimed with a stated joule rating.
• For batteries, buy the size the device takes, in the pack count you will actually use before the stated best-before date.
• For a power bank, read our power-bank guide first, and confirm ports and included cables on the listing.

Audio for study and commuting

• Confirm the connector or wireless standard matches the device: a USB-C wired set will not help a headphone-jack laptop.
• For wireless, check the stated battery life per charge and the case charging time.
• Check whether a case, cable or spare tips are stated as included.

Before you check out

• Confirm the item ships to your address in Canada and note the stated delivery window against the first day of school.
• Check the return window, especially for sizing-dependent items such as bags.
• Check the warranty on anything electronic.
