How to choose an air fryer

Start with usable capacity, not the headline number

Capacity is usually quoted as total basket volume in litres or quarts. That figure includes headroom you cannot fill, so treat it as a rough class rather than a promise. The number that actually matters is what the listing says about servings or the largest item the basket accepts. If the listing does not state it, the honest answer is that you do not know yet.

• Look for a stated capacity in litres or quarts, and for any separate stated basket dimensions.
• Check whether the capacity refers to one basket or to two baskets combined on dual-zone models.
• If you cook flat items such as sandwiches or fillets, basket width matters more than volume.

Measure the counter space before you order

Air fryers are taller and deeper than photographs suggest, and most need clearance above and behind for the exhaust. Listings normally publish product dimensions; compare them against the depth of your counter and the height of the cupboard above it.

• Write down the stated width, depth and height, then measure the space with a tape.
• Add clearance for the vent if the listing specifies a minimum.
• Check the stated weight if the unit will be lifted in and out of a cupboard.

Basket material and what it means for cleaning

Baskets are commonly non-stick coated metal, stainless steel or glass. Rising interest in glass baskets is one of the clearer signals in our watch list. Each material trades off differently, and the listing is where you confirm which one you are getting.

• Non-stick coated: easiest release, but the listing should state whether metal utensils are safe.
• Glass: lets you see food, and shows staining less, but is heavier and can be more fragile.
• Stainless steel: durable, usually needs more oil or more scrubbing.
• In every case, look for an explicit statement that the basket and any crisper plate are dishwasher safe. Do not assume it.

Confirm what is actually in the box

Multi-function models are often sold as 4-in-1 or 6-in-1. Those numbers describe cooking modes, not accessories. Racks, crisper plates, spare baskets and lids are frequently sold separately.

• Read the included-items list rather than inferring from the product photographs.
• If a second basket, rack or glass lid matters to you, confirm it is listed as included.
• Check whether replacement baskets and plates are sold on Amazon.ca for that model.

Power, wattage and where it will plug in

Most Canadian countertop air fryers are 120 V appliances and draw a substantial share of a standard circuit. The listing should state wattage. Plug a high-wattage appliance directly into a wall outlet, and follow the manufacturer instructions about extension cords and power bars.

• Note the stated wattage and the plug type.
• Avoid sharing a circuit with another high-draw appliance such as a kettle or toaster oven.
• Read the safety section of the listing and the manual for extension-cord guidance.

Cleaning, maintenance and warranty

• Check whether the heating element area is reachable for wiping, since that is where grease accumulates.
• Look for a stated warranty period and who honours it in Canada.
• Check that the seller ships from and services within Canada if support matters to you.
