How to compare portable air conditioners and dehumidifiers

Portable air conditioner and dehumidifier were the two leading terms in our past-90-day seasonal-home comparison, observed 2026-08-14. That is relative interest inside one set of terms, not search volume and not a bestseller signal. We do not hold product records in either category, so this is research only — read it, then compare current Amazon.ca results yourself.

They solve different problems

An air conditioner removes heat, and removes some moisture as a side effect. A dehumidifier removes moisture, and adds a small amount of heat to the room as a side effect. If the room is hot, you want cooling. If the room is cool but clammy, musty or condensing on windows, you want drying. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake in this category.

Reading air-conditioner capacity

• Cooling capacity appears as BTU per hour. Many portable units also state SACC, a seasonally adjusted figure that is lower and generally more representative of real conditions.
• Compare like with like: a SACC figure and a peak BTU figure are not the same number.
• Match capacity to room area and ceiling height. Sun exposure, insulation and the number of occupants all push the requirement up.
• Note whether it is single-hose or dual-hose, since that affects how it draws replacement air.

Venting is the part people forget

Every portable air conditioner has to exhaust hot air outdoors. The window kit is what makes that possible, and it is where listings vary most.

• Check the stated window-kit length range and compare it against your window opening.
• Confirm whether the kit suits a sliding window, a casement or crank window, or neither.
• Check the stated hose diameter and length, and whether an extension is available.
• Check how condensate is handled: a drain hose, an internal evaporation system, or a tank you empty.

Reading dehumidifier capacity

• Capacity is stated in pints or litres removed per day, measured under specific test conditions. Two different test standards give different numbers for the same machine.
• Check the stated tank volume, and whether a continuous-drain hose connection is included or sold separately.
• Check whether the listing states a minimum operating temperature, which matters for an unheated basement or garage.
• Look for a stated humidistat or auto-shutoff, so it does not run once the target is reached.

Power, noise and placement

• Note the stated wattage or amperage. Both categories draw heavily; plug directly into a wall outlet on a suitable circuit.
• Check the stated cord length against the distance to that outlet.
• Check for a stated noise level in decibels if the unit will run in a bedroom or office.
• Check the stated dimensions, weight and whether casters and a handle are included.

Filters, maintenance and warranty

• Find out which filters are washable and which are consumable, and whether replacements are sold on Amazon.ca.
• Check the stated cleaning interval for the tank or drain path.
• Check the stated warranty length, and who provides service in Canada.
