Jeff’s take
This is the second movie in a row that I've reviewed with John Candy. In my first review, (The Great Outdoors,) almost the entire review was dedicated to him rather than the movie itself. He just tends to always send a positive vibe in any movie he is in despite the poor treatment I notice he receives throughout the movies I've seen him in.
This movie in particular really showcases that and it actually almost annoyed me to the point where the final score would have been affected negatively. I couldn't believe how poorly he was treated throughout this movie. He is constantly ridiculed throughout for reasons such as his living arrangement and being an embarrassment ETC. The biggest problem I have with this is that he did not do anything to deserve it. He brings his cheerfulness and his positivity and what does he get in return? He gets children who are ungrateful and rude to him despite his attempts at getting the children to respect him.
On a personal note, I know if I was rude to anyone who was trying to be nice to me, certain people in my life would definitely not approve. To me this shows that those children were spoiled and didn't realize how much he was trying to help them. I was won over by the way he handled himself. He used humor and he never stopped trying to establish a good connection with them despite the teenage girl in particular not really deserving it as far as I'm concerned.
To be quite honest, I have to admit that I don't have a lot of patience myself and sometimes I have trouble keeping my emotions in check. Having said that, I feel I could learn something from John Candy's performance in this movie. He was calm cool and collected while the children made him look bad even when it got to a point where a person with a less amount of patience would have snapped. I feel like maybe this is the way I should act. Instead of getting mad and swearing revenge on people who I feel deserve it, (there's not a lot of people who I feel deserve it. At least nobody from within my immediate family,) I should just take it with a grain of salt like he does in his movies. I need to learn to just be the funniest man in the room.
In my mind, John Candy just brings warmth and positivity to every role I've seen him in even when he's treated badly throughout the movie. This is why I decided not to let the poor way I felt he was treated negatively affect the final score of this review. It seems like his great acting and positive influence on me have overshadowed anything negative about this movie. The funny about this is that he's an actor who was acting long before I was old enough to even know how to give a review and he's unfortunately been deceased longer than I've been a fan of any movie. Therefore, I'm gaining a positive influence by someone who was around basically before my time. This was just the kind of person John Candy was. He was an inspiration to all and this movie is proof of that.
With this in mind, I will now give my final score for this movie even though it should be obvious what it is given what I've said in the last few minutes. I could watch this movie over and over. This is actually another one of these movies that mom recommended so just on that fact alone, the movie should get a passing review. I have a rule that I would never give anything mom suggests me to watch anything less than a passing review even if the movie was horrible, (which this one obviously wasn't,) but when I combine the fact that mom suggested this movie to me along with how great this movie actually was, everybody knows what the final score should be.
All I can say is that I wish I could find more movies like this one. It was a great movie with a great actor.
Jeff O Meter final score: 10 out of 10.
