Pretty rough. Not for me.

Jeff’s final score for Ma — one man, one couch, one honest number.

Official theatrical poster artwork for Ma (2019)

This movie follows a lonely middle-aged woman who befriends a group of teenagers after they ask her to purchase them beer as they are underage. She attempts to persuade them into permanent friendship by allowing them to use her basement as their new hangout spot. However, as she begins to value their friendship more each day, she begins stalking them as it occurs to her that they may hold the key to her being able to recreate her youth which initially wasn't satisfying. What starts out as a new place for the teenagers to party may turn into their own personal prison if she has her way.

Content noteHorror/thriller: not recommended for young children; coarse language, extreme violence, some gory scenes, disturbing scenes, sexual content, scenes which depict animal abuse and cruelty, scenes with alcoholism, scenes with drug use and drug dialogue, nudity, scene which depicts arson, frightening scenes throughout

Jeff’s take

I've developed a habit recently of watching movies that initially hit different the first time they came out in theatres. I think this is the third movie in a row that this has happened. This is another movie I saw in theatres for the first time where my initial reaction was different when I saw it back then vs. when I have seen it more recently. The first time I saw this, I'll admit it was a little creepy to have a middle-aged woman invite a bunch of kids to party in her basement randomly. However, despite the opinion of other people, I did not see anything wrong with what she was initially doing and thought she was just being nice. I must have had to grow up a lot since then because after watching this movie again recently, it has become one that is very questionable to me. I realize now that what the woman in this movie wanted to do was wrong. I mean, what kind of middle aged woman would allow a group of underage teenagers into her house without their parents knowledge just because she is lonely? Does she not realize how that would be perceived if the right person found out? She had been committing a crime the whole movie and of course, nobody called her out on it until the very end. With the exception of a few scenes, the ending of this movie is way too predictable. Of course, everybody finds out in the end but what I don't understand is how she managed to get away with it without ending up in jail. There were so many scenes throughout this movie that pretty much guaranteed her fate. I don't believe she has any redeeming quality at all. She was just a woman that everybody wished would get her comeuppance. She had been playing with fire the whole movie to the point where I wished at certain points that she would have got what was coming to her. For this reason, it's pretty clear that not only is this movie not a good one, it should serve as a reminder for what should happen if anybody tries this in the real world. Maybe it's just because it's a movie and that's probably why she really dealt with no repercussions. So it would appear that with everything I've said so far this this movie should fail but it won't because some of the actresses were very good looking in this movie. Having said that, I simply cannot forgive the criminal actions of this woman throughout this movie. Therefore, this movie will not pass either. I hope the next one I review is better.
